How is volumetric weight calculated?
Multiply length × width × height in centimetres, then divide by the carrier's divisor: 5,000 for express, 6,000 for air freight. The chargeable weight is the higher of actual and volumetric weight.
- Express: L × W × H (cm) ÷ 5,000
- Air freight: L × W × H (cm) ÷ 6,000, i.e. 1 m³ = 167 kg
- Rail and road: 1 m³ = 333 kg
- Sea groupage: 1 m³ = 1,000 kg ("W/M" billing unit)
Example
A 60 × 40 × 40 cm carton weighing 8 kg measures 0.096 m³. By air its volumetric weight is 16 kg: you pay for 16 kg, not 8. By sea it counts as 0.096 m³. Hence the value of repacking oversized cartons.
